The Lakeview Leadership Team continues to make a meaningful impact by teaching younger students essential emotional regulation skills. In March, this group of nominated 6th, 7th, and 8th graders visited Elizabeth Ide and Prairieview, leading interactive lessons designed to help students understand and manage strong emotions.
Leading up to the visits, the Leadership Team dedicated time during before-school meetings in January and February to research and develop engaging 25-minute lessons. Once at each school, small groups of 3-4 team members visited every kindergarten through 5th-grade classroom, guiding students through hands-on activities that demonstrated calming strategies.
At Elizabeth Ide, younger students enjoyed My Mouth is a Volcano, a story that sparked discussions about handling overwhelming emotions. They then created drawings and writings about their own experiences before participating in a "volcano eruption" activity, where they practiced techniques taught by the Leadership Team.
At Prairieview, the Leadership Team worked with 3rd through 5th graders in small-group skits that portrayed different emotional scenarios. The students then applied new calming techniques introduced by the team, reinforcing self-regulation skills in an interactive way.
The visits were a resounding success, with both the younger students and Leadership Team members gaining valuable experiences. “The girls took command of my classroom today and did an amazing job implementing all of the activities,” shared Mrs. Hull. “The kids loved the volcano story, and many of them said they want to be in the Leadership Team when they get to Lakeview.”
With their dedication and creativity, the Leadership Team continues to inspire and empower younger students, ensuring this collaboration will have a lasting impact for years to come.
